Police are investigating a crash involving an RCMP cruiser on an icy highway in the Rural Municipality of Alonsa, approximately 179 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
Preliminary findings indicate an RCMP officer in a marked police vehicle collided with a Chevrolet Equinox on Highway 50 around 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 14, according to police.
Both vehicles were following a snowplow as it cleared the highway when the driver of the Equinox came to a sudden stop, an RCMP statement released Thursday night said.
The police vehicle rear-ended the Equinox, sending it into the ditch. The police vehicle spun around, remaining on the highway facing north in the southbound lane.
The 72-year-old male driver and 80-year-old female passenger of the Equinox were not injured in the collision. The RCMP officer received minor injuries.
Blowing snow and low visibility were contributing factors to the collision.
An RCMP traffic analyst is helping with the investigation.
