A Brandon police officer has been charged with imprudent driving after a crash earlier this year.
The officer charged was driving an unmarked police vehicle, or ghost car, on Jan. 2, when the Brandon Police Service got involved with a high-speed chase roaring along Victoria Avenue. The ghost car reportedly had its lights on, and was speeding south over the Daly Overpass on 18th Street in an attempt to catch up with the chase.
Instead, facing stopped traffic at the Rosser Avenue lights, the officer behind the wheel reportedly had no time to stop. After the crash, Police Chief Ian Grant wrote that the officer had chosen to drive off the road and into a pole instead of crashing into any civilian vehicle.
Imprudent driving is listed as a Class D offence by the province, and it carries a fine of $203.80. The charge was recommended after an independent review by the Office of Public Prosecutions.
