Known as Operation Festive Spirits, the campaign will combine regular Checkstops through December with targeted patols at random locations to be deter and detect impaired drivers. It is partially funded by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries.

Starting at 2 p.m. on Thursday, police will be checking northbound drivers on First Street, just north of the bridge, in the inaugural Checkstop.

Meanwhile, police also released final statistics from the 2013 RoadWatch program, which ran from May 1 to Nov. 30 this year.

The Brandon Police Service screened 24,028 vehicles through 56 separate Checkstops during that campaign, removing eight impaired drivers from the road. They also issued 727 tickets under the Highway Traffic Act, for a variety of offences, including:

  • Speeding –161
  • Using a cellphone – 113
  • Not wearing a seatbelt – 76
  • Unregistered vehicle – 62
  • No driver’s license – 57
  • Drive while disqualified – 28
  • Miscellaneous other tickets – 230

There were 25 Liquor Control Act infractions as well, including open liquor in a vehicle or underage possession.

Those Checkstops also resulted in three drug-related charges and 13 other charges laid under the Criminal Code against drivers or passengers.

Police say that, overall, they increased the number of violations by more than two-thirds in 2013, compared to the year prior, when they issued only 433 tickets.
