One of three cars involved in a collision on Veterans Way near Brandon on Tuesday afternoon. At least one person was taken to hospital as a result of the collision.

A cloud of dust kicked up by a passing semi is being blamed for a three-car crash on Veterans Way yesterday that sent a 10-year-old boy to hospital.

Police say they are now trying to track down the semi driver, who may not have even been aware of the collision that was in his or her wake.

The crash happened at about 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Two vehicles — a 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 2003 Dodge SX 2.0 — were stopped, facing eastbound, on Veterans Way, waiting for traffic to clear in order to make a left-hand-turn on to Curtis Road.

However, a semi truck pulling a livestock trailer came up behind the stopped vehicles, and swerved right onto the gravel shoulder to go around. Police say this was evasive action to avoid a collision, but it created a dust cloud that obscured the two stopped vehicles.

The driver of a 2004 Kia Spectra, following the semi, was blinded by the dust, and plowed into the back of the stopped Dodge, which in turn crashed into the back of the Tahoe.

A 10-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Dodge was taken to Brandon hospital for treatment. Although his condition isn't known, it's believed that his injuries were not life-threatening.

The 42-year-old driver of the Dodge, a woman from the RM of Cornwallis, was treated at the scene, as was the 26-year-old driver of the Kia, a Shilo woman.

The 52-year-old Brandon man at the wheel of the Tahoe was not injured.

Police say they continue to investigate the collision, and are trying to track down the driver of the semi trailer, who did not stop after the crash, and may not have known of it. At the moment, they have no description of the semi truck or the trailer, except that it was a livestock unit.

If anyone has information about the collision, they are asked to call the Brandon RCMP at  (204) 726-7520.
