Portions of First, 18th Streets to be closed in August

Ready for some traffic snarls? Two of Brandon's busiest thoroughfares will be closed for repairs this summer — but thankfully, not at the same time.

The CN rail crossings on both 18th Street and First Street will be torn up and repaired in August, requiring the streets to be closed for several days.

Eighteenth Street will be closed, just south of Park Avenue, on Sunday, Aug. 5 and Monday, Aug. 6, two days of the long weekend.

First Street will be closed, near Van Horne Avenue, from Sunday, Aug. 11 until Wednesday, Aug. 15.

Route detours haven't yet been completely figured out, the city says, but will be extensively publicized when they are.

There's no way to do the work in sections — each site requires the complete removal and replacement of timbers, rubber and the rails themsevles, which have to be done in full 140-foot sections.
