Potato seeding increases in Manitoba

WINNIPEG— Manitoba farmers seeded more potatoes this year than in 2011, according to preliminary data released today.

Statistics Canada said farmers here seeded 76,000 acres of potatoes this spring — an increase of 4.1 per cent from the 73,000 acres seeded in 2011.

Manitoba and Prince Edward Island tied for the largest percentage increase in seeded acres. P.E.I. remains the country’s leading potato -growing province, with 89,500 acres seeded this year. Manitoba was second.

StatsCan said the expansion of potato acreage in Manitoba was primarily due to increased contract volumes for processing potatoes, which are used to make things like french fries.

Nationally, the number seeded acres of potatoes in Canada rose by three per cent to 371,900 acres from 360,900 in 2011.
