Presence of Manitoba companies growing in India

A couple of Manitoba companies are leveraging the current trade mission to India, led by Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger, into a permanent presence in the booming sub-continent.
Winnipeg-based Westeel, a leading manufacturer of metal grain storage bins has opened an office in Mumbai and Micro Tool & Machine Ltd. (MTM) of Winnipeg has created a joint-venture company, MTM-Kirpekar in Pune, a city near Mumbai.
"We recognize the enormous potential of the India grain-storage market and we hope that through our office in Mumbai, we will be better-positioned to serve the market needs," said André Granger, president of Westeel, a division of Vicwest Inc.
MTM designs and manufactures advanced transformer-production equipment and has been doing business in the Indian market. The company participated in a Manitoba trade mission to India in 2010 when it first made contact with Kirpekar Engineering and has worked with Manitoba Trade and Investment to help make its entry into the Indian market.
Westeel was on a trade mission with the province in 2006.
"India is one of the world's fastest-growing economies and with our strong cultural and business connections, there's huge potential for greater trade between our economies," Selinger said in a release.
Manitoba has a trade representative in India.
During the trade mission, it was also announced Riya Travel, a Mumbai-based travel company, will be opening its first-ever Canadian office in Winnipeg.
On its website, Riya refers to itself as India's largest travel company, with more than $2 billion in annual revenue.
The company also has offices in Dallas, Philadelphia, New York, New Jersey, Houston and Atlanta.
