Proposed tax hike set at 1.4 per cent

Fourteen hours of fierce budget debate ended Sunday morning and Brandon taxpayers will see a 1.42 per cent tax hike.

This number came after council failed to pass the budget late Saturday night and was forced to revisit two contentious budget changes: Across-the-board staffing cuts and changes to the cities reserves.

Council trimmed $200,000 from its staffing budget and decreased its rainy day fund by $350,000 bringing the tax hike below the two per cent mark.

Coun. Stephen Montague was the only councillor to oppose the 2014 budget.
