Manitoba has been honoured for protecting natural areas.

The Canadian Council of Ecological Areas has presented the province with its 2012 Gold Leaf Award.

"We have become national leaders in successfully protecting private conservation lands from industrial development," said Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh.

"I'm thrilled our work through the Protective Areas Initiative program has received this recognition."

Manitoba worked jointly with three conservation agencies to include some of their lands in the protected network, including Ducks Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy of Canada, and Nature Manitoba.
