Public invited to have say on Brandon's growth
As Brandon works on a "fringe growth" strategy to determine how and where it will expand, citizens are invited to have their say.
The city is working with the Brandon Area Planning District board on the strategy, and have scheduled community workshop for the evening of Jan. 29.
Work on the strategy began in the fall of 2012, with the goal of identifying where, how and what type of growth should occur within the district’s boundaries over the next 50 years. The Brandon Area Planning District oversees growth and development within the city itself as well as the adjacent RMs of Elton and Cornwallis.
The strategy will address the types of development which could occur as Brandon’s boundaries expand, the pace at which that expansion and development should take place and the planning of investment for such expansion.
As the region’s growth will impact residents and businesses in all three municipalities, all Brandon, Cornwallis and Elton ratepayers are invited to share their vision for future growth.
"The Growth Strategy will provide a planning framework to Municipal Councils to make informed and sustainable decisions regarding the location, timing, and quality of development," says Ryan Nickel, acting senior planner with the city of Brandon. "We encourage all interested residents and stakeholders to attend this community workshop and assist us in envisioning the region over the next 50 years."
The community workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 6–9 p.m. at Park Community Centre. However, those interested in attending the workshop are asked to RSVP their attendance — before Jan. 25 — by contacting Hedy at 204-729-2154 (h.friesen@brandon.ca) or Brock at 204-943-3178 (feenstrab@mmm.ca).
The interactive evening will be facilitated by MMM Group of Winnipeg, with members of City of Brandon administration in attendance to aid in the discussion.
