Pulock powers Wheat Kings victory

Ryan Pulock got the party started early on his 18th birthday, netting both goals to lift the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 2-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday at Westman Place.

The win, in front of a crowd of 3,862, snapped a two-game skid and moved the Wheat Kings (5-2-0-0) to within a point of first place overall in the Western Hockey League.

"If you get a win and a couple goals, you can't complain," said Pulock, who is tied with Nick Buonassisi for the team lead with four goals.

Buonassisi, who shares the WHL lead with 12 points, set up both Brandon goals. Corbin Boes made 22 saves as the Wheat Kings bounced back from a 2-1 loss one night earlier against the Portland Winterhawks.

"I think with the young forward lineup we have, some games it's going to be tough to score goals, like it was tonight," Buonassisi said. "But we pulled it off in the third period with a huge goal there. Both goals from Pulock (were) just Howitzer shots from the point. I mean you can't say enough about that guy."

Colten Mayor opened the scoring for the Rebels (2-5-0-1) on a power play, midway through the second period. Pulock replied less than a minute later, firing in a point shot after Buonassisi won a faceoff in the Red Deer end.

The Wheat Kings appeared to take the lead later on in the period, only to have the goal disallowed through video review as the puck apparently went in off the skate of Brandon forward Alessio Bertaggia.

Brandon finally got that lead 1:19 into the third period. With Rebel Charles Inglis in the penalty box after taking a charging minor at the end of the second frame, Eric Roy set up Pulock and the Brandon captain rifled a shot past Red Deer goalie Patrik Bartosak and into the top corner of the net.

"Give credit to our guys tonight," Wheat Kings head coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk said. "We found a way to win. I think as the game went on, we started to play a better team game. Guys were getting in front of shots, guys were getting pucks out (of the defensive zone) on the wall, we weren't turning pucks over and it's good to see. We're starting to see our guys grow and know what we have to do as a team to be successful and put ourselves in good situations."

ONE-TIMERS: Bartosak made 27 saves … Brandon went 1-for-6 with the man advantage and killed off three of four Red Deer power plays, including a lengthy 5-on-3 in the second period … The Wheat Kings scratched C John Quenneville, C/LW Kord Pankewicz, LW Jack Palmer, LW Quintin Lisoway and D Riley Van Horne … Red Deer scratches included LW Turner Elson (lower body, day-to-day) … The Wheat Kings wrap up a four-game homestand against a pair of U.S. Division squads next weekend, hosting the Everett Silvertips on Friday and the Tri-City Americans on Saturday, before leaving on their West Coast road trip.
