RCMP charge two men after 4,900 cartons of cigarettes found after vehicle stop

Two men have been charged with possessing contraband cigarettes after RCMP seized 4,900 cartons Dec. 20.

RCMP said officers from the Powerview detachment stopped a pick-up truck just after 1 p.m. Dec. 20.
The truck was towing a rental trailer which contained 4,900 cartons of contraband cigarettes, or about 980,000 individual cigarettes, with an estimated street value of about $150,000.
The 32-year-old male driver from Fort Alexander and a 52-year-old male passenger from Winnipeg are facing charges of possession of contraband tobacco under the Excise Act.
If found guilty, the two men face fines of up to $10,000 and tax penalties of $750,000.
