Brandon Sun - ONLINE EDITION

Record-setting warm spell continues

Beware the ides of March? Not on this beautiful day!

The weather is forecast to be so nice this afternoon that at least one Brandon Sun reporter didn't even bother to bring a coat or jacket to the office this morning.

Environment Canada is calling for a high of 16 C under mainly sunny skies this afternoon, although southerly winds at about 20 km/h throughout the day will be kicking up some dust.

That'll easily set a new record. The warmest it's ever been on a March 15 was 7.1 C, in 1986.

Temperatures will stay above zero even overnight for the next few days, too. Tonight's low of 3 C will be followed by a day right out of mid-summer — a high of 23 C and sunny skies, although winds will continue.

St. Patrick's Day, on Saturday, will feel cooler, with a mix of sun and cloud, and a high of 15 C, but the temperature will climb again on Sunday to 20 C, although there is a 40 per cent chance of showers.

The possibility of showers will continue on Monday, with a high that day of 23 C and a low of 11 C.

For context, the predicted low on Monday would nearly set a record high. In 1945, the all-time high for March 29 was set at 11.7 C.

Later next week, things will cool off a bit — the forecast for Tuesday is a high of 11 C and a low of -1 C, with a high of 12 C on Wednesday.

That's still unseasonably warm, though. The normal high for this time of year is -1 C and the normal low is -11 C.
