Residential construction continues to climb

Permits issued last month by the city of Brandon's planning department show that local builders are focusing on places to live.

Twice as many residential construction permits were issued in January this year as last year, worth more than $4.6 million.

That's about $800,000 higher than the same month in 2012, and good for 24 new dwelling units.

The boost in residential constrution and a few big-ticket commercial items weren't enough to counter an overall decline, however.

Just $2.35 million in commercial construction permits were issued this January, well down from the $12.6 million issued last year. Another $2 million was issued in miscellaneous for roof repair at the Keystone Centre.

Other notable construction projects include the new Princess Auto building, an addition at the South End Sobeys, a science lab renovation at Neelin High School and a 16-unit condominium project.
