Builders had about the same number of projects on the go in 2012 as they did the year before, and although they spent less overall, more of it was directed to residential construction, according to year-end numbers released today by the city of Brandon.

Permits for 402 dwelling units were issued by the city's planning and building safety department in 2012, which includes 376 in Brandon proper and another 26 in the RMs of Cornwallis and Elton.

That's up from the 367 dwelling units that were reported in the wider Brandon area in 2011.

Nearly $70 million in residential construction permits was issued in 2012, up from about $53 million in 2011.

That increase partially offset a decline in commercial and insitutional construction. Overall, permit values in 2012 declined slightly, to a total of $144 million, down from 2011's value of $160 million.

A couple of large projects began in December, including the $2.3 million Murray House/CancerCare residence on Frederick Street, and a $1.3 million roof replacement/masonry repair at Assiniboine Community College’s North Hill campus.
