Reston day care gets two more grants

The government of Manitoba is pitching in with two separate grants to help out the construction of the Reston and area early learning centre.

A $25,000 grant from the Manitoba Community Places Program will be complemented by a $3,000 grant from the Hometown Manitoba program.

"We were ecstatic to receive the notification of this funding," said Andrea Guthrie, president and chair of the committee building the centre. "The project is starting to take form in the way of facility and finances."

Organizers say that the latest grants bring them 87 per cent of the way to their goal of $270,000 for construction, however, they also need to raise an estimated $90,000 for equipment, furnishings and a playground.

Other recent fundraising included a toy drive, held at the end of May in conjunction with the Reston town wide yard sales.

"We are pleased with the support from the toy drive and are continuing to accept donations of toys and other furnishings." Guthrie said. The collection included various indoor and outdoor toys including a swing set donated by the Reston School Playground Committee.

The committee continues to apply for more funding as well as plan for future fundraising events and activities. They say they are hoping to hire a director and then supporting staff prior to an anticipated grand opening in September.
