Riding Mountain to host search-and-rescue training

Search and rescue teams from around the province will be practicing their skills together in an event later this month at Riding Mountain National Park.

The annual event, scheduled this year for Sept. 28–30, brings teams together so they can rehearse for real-life search and rescue situations should they arise, and also gives them the opportunity to work together with team members from other jurisdictions. Getting familiar with each other can translate into valuable time saved during a real-life event.

Participants will have an opportunity to put their skills to the test — and develop new ones — as well as work with partners. It is being coordinated by the fire commissioner, the RCMP and the South-Central Mutual Aid District Volunteer Search and Rescue Manitoba team.

The Department of National Defence, the Civil Aviation Search and Rescue Association, and an RCMP unmanned helicopter will also participate in the exercise. Teams will be observed on the ground, on the water and in the air — including low-flying aircraft and the deployment of military searchers parachuting in to a mock aircraft crash site.

There are about 25–30 large scale ground search-and-rescue operations in Manitoba every year, plus many smaller operations, water operations and aviation searches.

Though encouraged to ask questions, members of the public are asked not to interfere with the exercise.
