Robbery ring busted in Dauphin

A failed robbery over the weekend led Dauphin police to a number of suspects in a large theft ring.

About $5,000 in property, believed stolen, has been seized, and five people have been arrested.

The break in the case came Monday morning, when a robbery attempt from the previous evening was reported to police.

Two people say they were walking in a back lane near Second Avenue SW in Dauphin at around 10:30 p.m. when they were approached by a man and a woman. The man, carrying a crow bar, demanded money from the couple, but it didn't end well for the would-be robber — the crow bar was taken from the suspect and he and his accomplice fled.

No one was injured during the altercation. After it was reported, police were able to track down and arrest a male suspect at about 5 p.m. Monday.

Following his arrest, investigators linked him to a number of recent break-ins within the city of Dauphin and learned that he had a quantity of stolen property at his Dauphin home.

On Tuesday afternoon, investigators arrested four more people for possession of stolen property, including a woman who is also a suspect in Sunday's attempted robbery. On Tuesday evening, police searched a Main Street home and seized approximately $5,000 worth of property.

Officers are working their way through identifying the seized property, and are hoping to return it to its rightful owners. Anyone who has been the victim of a recent theft of break-in is asked to call the Dauphin detachment, if they haven't already.

Leroy Christopher James Thompson, 24, of Dauphin, has been charged with robbery, possession of property obtained by crime, breach of probation and breach of undertaking.

Samantha Jessica Chartrand, 26, of Gilbert Plains and Jennifer Louella Chartrand, 26, have also been charged with possession of property obtained by crime. They have been remanded in custody to appear in Provincial Court in Dauphin.

Jason Matthew Chartrand, 26, of Dauphin and Eric Michael Chartrand, 24, of Dauphin, have been released from custody on a promise to appear with a court date of Aug. 21.

The case is being jointly investigated by the recently created Dauphin Municipal RCMP General Investigation Section, along with Dauphin municipal detachment officers.

This seems like a family affair. Why are these people not working a at decent job!! Throw the book at them, its people like them that make our towns and cities unsafe!!
