UPDATE: Man badly hurt in Hwy 16 crash

A seriously injured man had to be cut from his semi truck and airlifted to a Regina hospital after a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 16 late Wednesday morning.

Saskatchewan RCMP say the crash happened at about 10:30 a.m. on the highway, about six kilometres west of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border.

With blizzard conditions and close to zero visibility at the time, they say it looks like a westbound pickup truck first collided with an eastbound semi trailer, which was itself then hit by a westbound semi. A four-door vehicle that was headed east then crashed into the two semis.

The driver of the pickup truck, the three people who were in the four-door vehicle, and the two passengers in the eastbound semi all had minor injuries.

However, the 62-year-old man who was driving the westbound semi had to be removed using the Jaws of Life. He was then taken by STARS air ambulance to hospital in Regina with serious injuries.

Police said shortly before 3 p.m. that tow truck was still on scene, removing vehicles from the blocked east-bound lane of the Highway. Traffic was moving through the area, but slowly, and police advised that motorists should expect delays for several hours.
