Sex assault fugitive arrested in Spain
Iain Kenneth George Smy (SUBMITTED)
A man accused of sexual assaulting boys in Brandon in the 1980s has been arrested overseas.
Police say Iain Kenneth Smy, 49, was arrested Monday at a home in Malaga, Spain, and is being held in custody while authorities apply for his extradition.
Smy could be back in Brandon to face charges in as little as 60 days, police said, although it could take longer if Smy appeals the extradition process.
Smy was first arrested in Ontario in 2009, after a two-year investigation. He was charged with nine counts of sexual assault involving three boys between 11 and 15 years old.
The offences are alleged to have occurred in Brandon between 1984 and 1988, during youth group outings.
Although Smy was brought back to Brandon to face the charges, he was released on bail, then skipped out on a court date in July 2010. At that time, he was believed to have fled the country.
In November 2011, police issued a plea for public assistance in location Smy.
Winnipeg Police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said Brandon Police recently asked Winnipeg Police for help in tracking Smy down.
Michalyshen said that even though Smy forfeited his Canadian passport upon his arrest, he later managed to secure a British passport and travelled to South America and Great Britain before stopping in Malaga, Spain.
Smy’s parents are residents of Great Britain, Michalyshen said.
