Slip and slide into the new year

Hanbury Hill sledding hill and the Power Smart Waterfall of Lights Display/Skating Oval will both have extended hours of operation on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31st), the city announced Friday.

Lighting at both venues will remain on until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Eve/Day, providing for two extra hours of evening availability for the public who want to ring in the New Year by enjoying Brandon’s outdoor recreational amenities, the city said in a release.

The Hanbury Hill sledding hill is located south off of Braecrest Drive in Sir Winston Churchill Park and provides both a longer run for the older ages and a smaller run on the backside of the hill for younger children.

A warm-up gazebo is also available for public use. While families are encouraged to enjoy the tobogganing hill on New Year’s Eve, the City of Brandon would like to advise the public that Hanbury Hill is an unsupervised area.

The Skating Oval is located immediately west of the City of Brandon’s Community Services Complex on McGregor Avenue. The public is encouraged to park in designated areas on McGregor Avenue or Hilton Avenue and walk into the oval area.

There are two warming shacks which will be open for public use. Fire pits and wood will also be available for public use.
