Steinbach wants province to review anti-bullying Bill 18

Steinbach city council has jumped into the debate over the anti-bullying Bill 18, voting 5-2 last night to urge Education Minister Nancy Allan to review the legislation because it jeopardizes religious freedom.

Steinbach Mayor Chris Goertzen said this morning that no councillor made specific reference in Tuesday’s debate to a provision in the bill that requires both public and private schools to accommodate any student who asks to form a gay-straight alliance in the school.

"I have no problem expressing the concern of our citizens," Goertzen said. "We’re a tolerant, progressive community" that puts student safety first.

"We want to make sure people can still practise their faith and follow the law," the mayor said.
