Storm makes for dangerous driving in Westman: RCMP

A growing winter storm across southern Manitoba has created poor driving conditions on Westman roads.

Manitoba's RCMP say blowing snow and high winds have created poor driving conditions on the following highways:

• Highways 351, 340, 457, 464, 468, 270, and 250

In a press release on behalf of the RCMP, Manitoba Highways states delays in emergency response times on the highways may occur, and the duration and severity of these poor driving conditions may change suddenly.

The RCMP recommends motorists drive with extra caution, reduce their speed and increase the distance between other vehicles.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for the Brandon, Carberry and Treherne regions. A major winter storm currently developing in Colorado is moving northeastward into Manitoba and will affect much of the southern half of the province over the next 24 hours.

The storm is expected to intensify significantly this evening, as the heaviest snow moves into Manitoba. Widespread snowfall accumulations of 10-15 centimetres are expected tonight. This snow will be accompanied by strong northerly winds resulting in very poor visibility and hazardous driving conditions.

The blizzard is expected to gradually taper off during the day on Saturday.
