As a blizzard stormed through Westman Friday evening, Manitoba Highways closed two major highways, including the Trans-Canada Highway from Headingley to Virden and Griswold, and Highway 16 from the Trans Canada to Minnedosa.
The Trans-Canada Highway was closed to traffic as of 9 p.m. Friday evening. Highway 16 was closed nearly an hour earlier.
High winds, snow and drifting snow made Manitoba highways dangerous to navigate. Visibility for motorists was highly reduced. Several sections of the Trans-Canada Highway between Brandon and Winnipeg were partly covered with snow and ice, even before the lanes were ordered closed.
