String of break-ins across south-central Manitoba

Police say businesses in small-town Manitoba should take care to protect their premises after a series of break-ins and attempted break-ins across several south-central towns.

Treherne RCMP say that, between Aug. 21 and Sept. 11, they were called to numerous incidents to businesses in Trehern, St. Claude, Somerset, La Rivière, Holland and Notre Dame.

Suspects damaged windows or doors to gain entry and in some instances tampered with alarm systems to attempt to gain entry to the businesses.

Five businesses in Souris also suffered break-ins or attempted break-ins last weekend.

As officers continue to investigate each incident, Central Plains RCMP remind business owners to be vigilant on implementing and maintaining crime reduction strategies.

There are numerous steps businesses can take to assist in making their businesses more secure and reduce crime.

That includes having the checkout counter near the front of the store, so that employees can monitor activities inside and outside the store.

Trees near the building should also be kept well-trimmed and fire escape ladders should be secured so that they cannot be used to access the roof. Landscaping that can provide cover or hiding places to thieves should be clears, and the area around the building should be well lit, and visible to the street.

Other suggestions include avoiding large displays or posters that would cover the windows and removing large objects from loading zones, where people could hide.

When closing a business for the evening, police also suggested emptying out the cash drawer, and leaving it open, so that it can be seen from outside to be empty.

Sometimes even the smallest actions, such as getting together with the other businesses in your area and agree to watch out for suspicious activity, are beneficial to help keep the business community safer.
