Strong start to 2014 for Brandon builders

The construction industry in Brandon and area is roaring ahead to start the year.

Statistics compiled by the Brandon planning department show that nearly $12.2 million in construction permits were issued to the end of January 2014 — well up from $9.8 million issued the year before.

That amount is spread over 55 permits in the city, which down from the 77 issued in the first month of 2013. The amount of residential construction also dipped a very slight amount, although a total of 39 housing starts were recorded so far this year, which is up from the 24 that started last year.

Significant construction projects started last month include fire alarm upgrades at Assiniboine Community College’s Victoria Avenue East campus worth $2.27 million, construction of a 24-plex on First Street North worth $2.65 million and the start of renovations at the former Convergys building, worth $2.89 million.
