Sump pump, backwater valve program expands this year

After a limited run last year, the city of Brandon is partnering with the province to provide sump pump and backwater valve rebates to any property in Brandon that doesn't already have one.

"Last year’s program was targeted towards households or businesses in areas of the City that we determined were most at risk for sewer back-up and homes that had already experienced sewer-back up problems in the past," said Ted Snure, the city’s general manager of development services. "This year, we are pleased that the program is able to offer financial help to any property owner who wishes to undertake such proactive measures against a potential sewer back-up."

Through the program, subsidy funding is available for up to 60% of the total materials and installation cost, up to a maximum of $2,000 for the sump pump and pit and up to a maximum of $1,000 for the backwater valve. The city, in partnership with the province, is providing a total of $180,000 in funding.

Work must be completed by a licensed plumber in order to qualify for funding and cannot be performed prior to making application for subsidy funding.

To qualify for the 2012 program, homeowners must get two quotes from a licensed plumber, including a drawing and itemized costs. Then, they will have to apply for a flood protection permit through the city and pay the $70 permit fee at the time of application.

The program requires a minimum of two inspections by a city building inspector — one after the components are installed and are still visible for inspection, another after backfill when the work is complete.

Unlike last year’s program, there will not be a waiting list for the 2012 program and retroactive applications will not be accepted.
