On Wednesday, the society will mark World Arthritis Day with two events in Brandon.

The day will begin at 9 a.m. at Brandon City Hall, with Mayor Shari Decter Hirst signing a proclamation declaring Oct. 10 to be World Arthritis Day in the city.

The Arthritis Society flag will be raised in recognition of the proclamation.

At 9:30 a.m., registration will begin at Prairie Oasis Senior Centre for the Moving Beyond Arthritis Forum centred around the theme of managing chronic pain.

Mayor Decter Hirst, who has rheumatoid arthritis, will deliver opening remarks, and participate in celebrating the 30th Anniversary of The Brandon Arthritis Society Support Group.

Members of the Wheat City Women’s Institute will also be attending the forum.

Keynote speaker, Dr. David Robinson, of the University of Manitoba, will discuss the role of a rheumatologist in patient care for people living with arthritis.

"Rheumatologists are qualified to treat more than 100 forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, osteoarthritis, and gout. A family doctor can make the referral, at no cost to the patient", Dr. Robinson said.

Other presenters at the forum will include Brandon based specialists on a number of topics –medications, chronic pain, self management tools, mobility aids and Tai Chi for People with
Arthritis.

Arthritis affects more than 250,000 Manitobans, from infants to seniors, and can strike anyone, at
any time. One of the biggest myths is that arthritis is an ‘old person’s’ disease when in fact nearly
three of every five people with arthritis are working-age Manitobans under the age of 65. Two-thirds of
those affected with arthritis are women, and it is a leading cause of disability.

Both events are open to the public at no cost, and the forum includes a lunch and refreshments.
