The Westman area boasts three finalists for the upcoming Manitoba Tourism Awards, including two from Melita and one from Neepawa.

Allan Drysdale, longtime treasurer and board member for the archives of the Beautiful Plains Museum in Neepawa, is up for Volunteer of the Year Award. Drysdale also laboured to restore the town's Roxy Theatre to its original glory, and changed the Lily Festival parade route for better viewing opportunities of the floats and antique tractors.

Melita's Tanis Chalmers is being considered for the Aspiring Youth Award. During her term as the town's Economic Development Officer, Chalmers helped redesign the town's website to make it more user-friendly, designed the new town logo and helped organize a dinner theatre that raised $9,000 for the community.

Chalmers also took time out from her maternity leave in 2010 to chaperone an Australian tourist by the name of Melita who had come to visit her namesake community. The family still keeps in touch.

Melita could also be recognized town-wide. The Melita and Area Tourism Committee has been nominated for Marketing Excellence Award, following their successful inauguration of Banana Days, including the unveiling of a brand-new statue.

The awards, the 14th annual, will be presented in Winnipeg in September.
