A man apparently fell asleep behind the wheel of his pickup truck early this morning, causing it to veer off the road and roll into the Little Souris River south of Brandon.
Police say they were called at about 5 a.m. to the Highway 10 bridge over the Little Souris, about eight kilometres south of Brandon. They say the 28-year-old Laurier man who was driving was luckily able to get himself out of the upside-down truck, which was completely under the water.
He was the only person in the truck at the time of the rollover, and walked to a nearby farm yard, where he was able to call 911. He was later taken to hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Investigators say that he was headed north on the highway when he fell asleep behind the wheel of his truck, a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500. The truck apparently entered the west ditch before rolling into the river.
RCMP continue to investigate, and say that charges under the Highway Traffic Act are being contemplated.
