Manitoba regional cabinet minister Vic Toews was taken to hospital by ambulance Monday morning suffering from the flu.

"Minister Toews has been battling a seasonal flu for the past number of weeks," said his spokesman Mike Patton. "As a precaution, he was taken to the hospital today for observation."

Patton asked that Toews' privacy be respected.

Toews has had a difficult few months since he introduced legislation to allow the government more access to personal client information from Internet Service Providers.

He was targeted by a Liberal staffer who leaked details of Toews' divorce record on Twitter, and by the hacker group Anonymous who threatened him on YouTube with more leaks unless he resigned.

Last week Toews asked a parliamentary commitee to do what it could to track the culprits and help protect MPs from more such attacks.
