'Tornado Hunter' coming to Westman

Some Westman towns may be getting a visitor they'd prefer not to see.

Greg Johnson, who calls himself the 'Tornado Hunter,' posted this morning on his Facebook page that southeastern Saskatchewan and southwest Manitoba would see conditions this afternoon that were ripe for tornados.

"South of the Trans-Canada Highway from Brandon to Estevan looks to have the best chance mid- to late afternoon," he wrote, adding that his team would be targeting a corridor between Carlyle, Sask., and Pipestone.

Just before 2:30 p.m., Enviornment Canada issued a thunderstorm watch for most of Westman, from Russell to Melita and Riding Mountain to Manitou. They said severe thunderstorms were expected this afternoon.

Since this morning, the forecast has called for the possibilty of a few thunderstorms in Westman this afternoon, with the possibility of a severe thunderstorm late today.

Severe thunderstorm watches were also issued late this morning for some areas of southeastern Saskatchewan, including Estevan, Weyburn, Carlyle and Moosomin. Some of those were later upgraded to warnings.

Environment Canada says that a trough of low pressure coming in from north-central North Dakota, combined with moist unstable air and daytime heating, will help to trigger strong thunderstorms over southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba this afternoon. The storms could bring large hail and damaging winds.

In his Facebook post, Johnson notes that temperatures through the region will near 30 C, and "a very moist surface layer should be enough to get things churning out there." He'll be live-streaming his chase on his website.
