Truck hits highway sign, rolls

A Winnipeg man was taken to hospital after the truck he was driving hit a highway construction sign near Brandon and rolled. He also faces charges after the crash.

Police say it happens just after midnight last night, on the Trans-Canada Highway about 4 kilometres east of Brandon.

An east-bound 1998 Dodge Ram pickup appears to have struck an electronic construction warning sign along the highway, sending it out of control, and rolling into the south ditch.

Emergency crews from both Brandon and Souris were called out, including a traffic analyst. The east-bound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours, but are now open.

The driver, who was the only person in the truck, was taken to Brandon hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were described as minor.

A 32-year-old Winnipeg man is facing charges of driving while disqualified, however more charges may yet be laid. Police say they believe alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash.

WHEN will they EVER learn?

Why don't our politicians propose to INCREASE the fines for drinking and driving SUBSTANTIALLY, INCREASE the sentences, make it absolutely CRAZY to risk doing this.

Also included in this proposal should be MANDATORY counselling, etc. for alcohol and perhaps other addiction problems.

This behaviour needs to STOP and EVERY measure should be taken to PREVENT someone risking this poor behavioural choice.

Are the fines and the sentencing not LARGE ENOUGH?

WHAT should be done to make this behaviour STOP and become a thing of our past?

WHAT more should be done?
