Tuivai, Barclay named all-Canadians

Brandon University Bobcats left side Sam Tuivai was named a second team all-Canadian at the CIS men’s volleyball awards banquet in Quebec City on Wednesday night.

Tuivai led the Canada West conference with 4.35 kills and 4.89 points per set during the Canada West regular season, helping Brandon post a 13-9 record and a sixth-place finish. The second-year New Zealander averaged 4.12 kills and 5.09 points per set in the Bobcats’ four playoff matches, which included a pair of wins over the sixth-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies as well as victories over the top-ranked Alberta Golden Bears and third-ranked Trinity Western Spartans to win the Canada West crown.

That earned Brandon the top seed going into the national championship at Université Laval, which the Bobcats open up on Friday against the Montreal Carabins at 5 p.m. (WCG-TV).

Meanwhile in Sherbrooke, Que., Brandonite Lisa Barclay was named a first-team all-Canadian at the CIS women’s volleyball awards banquet.

The third-year left side with the UBC Thunderbirds finished third in Canada West by averaging 3.79 kills and 4.44 points per set during the regular season. UBC finished the year with a 21-1 record and went on to win its second Canada West championship in three years.

UBC, the top seed at the CIS championship, begins its quest for a sixth-straight national title on Thursday when it plays the Laval Rouge et Or in a quarter-final at 2 p.m.
