Merv Tweed is the Conservative MP for Brandon-Souris.
Merv Tweed has been elected as chairperson of the agriculture and agri-food standing committee in the House of Commons.
Tweed, the Conservative MP for Brandon-Souris, was elected to the position today.
"It is an honour to chair a committee that will have such a major impact on the people of Brandon-Souris and rural Canada," he said. "Our government’s top priority remains the economy and agriculture is a vital piece of our rural economies".
The committee may examine any issue related to Canada’s agriculture and agri-food industry, with a focus on bills, expenditures and activities of the organizations like
- Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency
- The Canadian Grain Commission
- The Farm Products Council of Canada
Two Crown corporations:
- The Canadian Dairy Commission
- Farm Credit Canada
The committee also examines the activities of other organizations that are not part of the agriculture and agri-food portfolio, such as the Canadian Wheat Board and the Pest Management Regulatory Agency.
An important part of the committee’s mandate is to study and vote on the items for the various agencies in the Agriculture and Agri-Food portfolio.
"I look forward to the new challenges as chair of the agriculture committee," Tweed said.
