Two people in intensive care after pair of fires last night

Emergency crews responded to a house engulfed in flames Tuesday night on 15th Street. According to residents of the three-apartment house, the fire started on a ground-floor apartment. Occupants also say it's possible it stared after someone fell asleep with a lit cigarette, although authorities are still investigating.

Two people are still in intensive care after a major fire last night — one of two reported in the city.

Despite the massive downpour, firefighters were called to the two house fires within half an hour of each other. Police say there is no evidence that the fires are linked.

The first was reported just after 11 p.m. last night in the 100-block of First Street. Two men and a woman were found collapsed inside the building and were taken to hospital. One man has since been released, but the other two remain in intensive care this morning.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the suite in which it started but the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Just a half hour after that fire was reported, firefighters were also called to the 400-block of 15th Street, where another house was on fire. All the occupants in that building, another multi-unit dwelling, had managed to evacuated safely.

Again, the fire was able to be contained to a single suite, although there was also some exterior damage to a neighbouring residence. The cause of the fire is also still under investigation.
