United Way bests last year's total

Local businesses and organizations gathered earlier this afternoon to celebrate their efforts and hear the results of the 2012 United Way Brandon and District campaign.

The United Way, along with the help and support of the Brandon community, raised a total of $758,655.47, an increase of seven per cent from last year, but just missing their goal of $775,000.

"I think it will only get bigger and better every year," said campaign chair Bob Cey.

Some campaign highlights this year included the annual Christmas tree auction, which raised nearly $21,470.00, and the kick-off golf tournament in Shilo, among many others.

"One of the highlights of the campaign this year was going on a tour of the soup kitchen and seeing first hand what's happening in our community and where United Way fits in," Cey said. "That way you know when you're out there doing your job that you know exactly why you're doing it, so that was good."

Cey added that the 2013 campaign will start off once again with the kick-off golf tournament and this year's campaign chair will be announced at their annual meeting in March.
