After missing two seasons of play due to repairs from 2011 flood damage, the Wheat City Golf Course reopened Saturday morning with a rude welcome.
Between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. that day what is suspected to be an ATV drove off 50th Street and over two large boundaries by the green of the 15th hole to tear up the course.
"He ripped circles in the green, and up and down the fairway," Golf Course Superintendent Tim Benstead said. "He knew where he was going and what he was doing."
The hole is still playable, after hours of work that included cutting green from other holes to patch up the 15th.
Benstead said it was a disappointing thing to see after such a positive reaction from players and members who played the course beginning at 7:30 a.m. that day.
