Vehicle sales in May increased about 18 per cent from a year earlier

WINNIPEG — Manitoba dealers sold more than 5,000 new cars and trucks in May — an increase of nearly 18 per cent from a year earlier, according to new Statistics Canada figures released today.

The raw sales data, which has not been adjusted to take into account seasonal variations, showed 5,031 new vehicles left dealership lots during the month.

That was an increase of 17.8 per cent from the 4,269 that were sold in May 2011. The gain was slightly below the national average increase of 18.8 per cent — 180,368 units versus 152,064.

Sales of trucks, which includes light and heavy trucks, vans, mini-vans, sport utility vehicles and buses, led the charge in Manitoba. They rose by 18.8 per cent to 3,272 units from 2,754 a year earlier.

But car sales were also up sharply, climbing by 16.1 per cent to 1,759 units from 1,515.

Nationally, it was car sales that saw the biggest gain, increasing by 21 per cent to 84,001 units. Truck sales grew by 16.6 per cent to 96,367.
