Visit a farm, or host visitors, on 'Open Farm Day'

Sunday, Sept. 19

Manitobans will have the opportunity to visit one of many Manitoba farms taking part in the province's first Open Farm Day on Sept. 19, Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI) Minister Stan Struthers announced today.

"Open Farm Day will be a great opportunity for farmers and visitors to connect with each other," said Struthers.  "The public can tour a farm to see up close how a farm runs and participating farmers can showcase their operations, sell produce, highlight farm business life and educate Manitobans about locally produced food and Manitoba's agriculture industry."

More than 20 farms around the province, including fruit and vegetable producers and crop and livestock farms, are participating in Open Farm Day

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about farm products, see demonstrations, take a walking tour and ask questions about farm life.

"Unless they personally know a farmer, most people never see past the farm gate as they drive by," said the minister.  "A number of farmers have volunteered to invite the public to visit their farm site.  This will give visitors the chance to appreciate the contributions of our farm families and will help raise awareness of the importance of agriculture to the health of Manitobans and strength of our economy."

Information on Open Farm Day is available by calling MAFRI's agri-tourism line at 204-821-5322, online at www.manitoba.ca/agriculture and at the MAFRI booth at the Red River Exhibition at the Farm Fun Activity Centre.
