Voters in Morris, Arthur-Virden head to polls today

It’s byelection time in Morris and Arthur-Virden today.

The polls have been open in the two Manitoba constituencies since 7 a.m. this morning. Eligible voters in the two provincial ridings will have a chance to vote up until 8 p.m.

The candidates in Morris are Jeremy Barber (Liberal), Dean Harder (NDP), Alain Landry (Green), Shannon Martin (Progressive Conservative) and Ray Shaw (Independent). The seat in Morris was previously held by Conservative Mavis Taillieu, who retired back in February 2013.

In Arthur-Virden, the candidates are Floyd Buhler (Liberal), Doyle Piwniuk (Progressive Conservative), Bob Senff (NDP) and Kate Storey (Green).

The Arthur-Virden seat in the Legislature was made vacant when former Conservative MLA Larry Maguire left provincial politics to win the Brandon-Souris seat in the federal byelection last November.

Residents of the Arthur-Virden and Morris electoral divisions are eligible to vote if they:

* are Canadian citizens

* are 18 years of age on or before election day

* have resided in Manitoba for at least six months immediately before election day.

Even if they were not enumerated, they can still vote, as long as they bring government-issued photo ID or two other documents with their name. ID is not required if the voter’s name is on the voters list.
