Warming up with snow today, stretch of sun to follow

A brief warm spell today will bring periods of light snow, but temperatures are expected to fall this afternoon and stay relatively chill for the next few days.

Environment Canada is calling for mainly cloudy skies today, with periods of light snow this morning and early this afternoon. A bit of wind this afternoon is expected, from the northwest, at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h. Today's high will be -5ºC, but the mercury will begin to shrink as a cold front moves in this afternoon. Skies will clear and the temperature will fall to -15ºC.

Clear skies tonight will drive the temperature down to a low of -26ºC, with continuing winds pushing the wind chill to -32.

Tomorrow should be sunny and cold, with a high of -22ºC, setting the template for the next few days.

Sunny skies are expected for Friday, with a high of -17ºC, then more sun over the weekend, but even colder, with daytime highs on Saturday and Sunday of about -23ºC. Weekend overnight lows will be around -32ºC.

Into next week, Monday should be sunny, with a high of -18ºC, followed by continuing sun and a high of -14ºC for Christmas Eve.

The normal high for this time of year is -10ºC; the normal low is -20ºC.

The coldest it's ever been on this date was in 1951, when it dropped to -37.2ºC. The warmest ever was 7.2ºC, in 1943.
