Warriors work over Wheat Kings
The Moose Jaw Warriors handed the Brandon Wheat Kings their first loss of the Western Hockey League season on Saturday night.
Sam Fioretti scored three times and added an assist as the Warriors blasted the Wheat Kings 6-1 in Moose Jaw, Sask.
Bryson Gore, Carter Hansen and Jordan Wyton also scored for the Warriors (2-2-0-0), who scored the first four goals of the game, including a 3-0 first-period lead.
"I thought we were outworked right from the start of the game," Wheat Kings assistant coach Darren Ritchie said. "When you're chasing the puck and always on the wrong side, you're going to be in for a long night."
Eric Roy replied for the Wheat Kings (4-1-0-0).
The Warriors did all of their damage in the first two periods, prompting the Wheat Kings to replace starting goalie Corbin Boes for the start of the third period. Boes made just 17 saves on 23 shots, while Curtis Honey stopped all 10 shots he faced in the final frame.
Clearly, it wasn't one of Boes' better performances, but Ritchie said the responsibility for his struggles should be shared.
"It's everybody," Ritchie said. "We've got to be more committed to our zone and doing the little things that we need to do right now; get back to blocking shots, boxing out in front of the net, letting our goalies see the puck and not giving (the other team) second chances."
Warriors rookie Justin Paulic had a quiet night in net, making 18 saves for the victory.
ONE-TIMERS: Brandon went 0-for-6 on the power play, while Moose Jaw was 3-for-4 … Wheat Kings RW Jayce Hawryluk and C John Quenneville got their first WHL points by assisting on Roy's goal. It was also Hawryluk's WHL debut after he missed the pre-season and first four games of the regular season with a concussion … Brandon scratched LW Richard Nejezchleb, RW Quintin Lisoway, LW Kord Pankewicz, D Colton Waltz and D Riley Van Horne … Warriors D Joel Edmundson, a Brandonite, had an assist in his return from a two-game suspension … Moose Jaw scratches included LW Justin Kirsch (suspension) … The Wheat Kings play their next four games at home, starting this Friday against the Portland Winterhawks … Medicine Hat acquired C Elgin Pearce, a 20-year-old who scored 21 goals last season, from Kootenay on Saturday for a fifth-round pick in next year's bantam draft.
