Weekly earnings edge up in July

WINNIPEG — Average weekly earnings edged a little higher in Manitoba in July, according to Statistics Canada figures released today.

The agency said non-farm payroll employees — people who work for someone rather than being self-employed — earned an average of $835.58 in July. That was an increase of 0.3 per cent from June, when average earnings were $832.94, and up 3.3 per cent from a year earlier, when they were $808.59.

The month-over-month gain was the smallest among the eight provinces that saw earnings rise. All of the provinces posted year-over-year gains, with Manitoba’s being the fourth-smallest.

Statistics Canada also said there were 574,300 Manitobans on non-farm payrolls in July. That was an increase of 0.1 per cent from June’s total of 575,100, and a gain of 1.7 per cent from July 2011, when there were 564,700.

Nationally, Canada saw its average weekly earning rise by 1.1 per cent to $906.68 from $896.42 in June. The year-over-year increase was 4.1 per cent.

It also saw only a slight increase in the number of payroll employees — up 0.1 per cent to 15.27 million from 15.25 million in June. The year-over-year gain was 1.9 per cent.
