The West Nile virus has once again been detected in western Manitoba this year, although no human cases have yet surfaced, according to the provincial health department.

Manitoba Health says that 20 infected mosquitoes have been found so far this year, in at least 11 different communities — including Brandon, Carberry, Deloraine and Sioux Valley.

The latest samples were found during the week of July 15.

Recent hot, humid conditions have created ideal conditions for the development of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, the species that carries West Nile, and Manitoba Health is reporting a high risk of exposure to the virus throughout southern Manitoba. Manitobans are urged to take special care to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
