WestJet's new Encore service, expected to be unveiled later today, will not include Brandon on its initial list of destination, early reports say.
The airline confirmed Monday that it would be flying daily into Fort St. John from both Vancouver and Calgary with the new service. The Financial Post reported that Encore would also fly to Nanaimo and Saskatoon, out of Calgary, when the service officially launches on June 24.
Encore may also be flying betwen Vancouver and Victoria using their new Bombardier Q400s, which are 78-seat turboprops.
An Encore "help" page on the WestJet website appears to confirm the new service will be in B.C., with nothing at this point for Brandon. Online reservations are now being taken to or from either Fort St. John or Nanaimo, although they bring up an alert notifying travellers about the Encore service.
WestJet will officially unveil the complete schedule later today. Additional destinations are expected to be announced between nine and 12 months form now, as the company takes delivery of more of the up to 45 Bombardier Q400s it has on order.
The list of destinations may expand as early as August. According to the Financial Post, the airline also has several other routes for Encore regional carrier on its reservations system including flights between Calgary and Edmonton, Regina, and Grande Prairie.
The country’s second-largest carrier is making the changes as rival Air Canada is preparing to launch July 1 its new low-cost carrier Rouge to destinations in Europe and the Caribbean, and beefing up its regional service to western Canadian destinations.
