A map of total precipitation in Manitoba shows a dark blue circle right around Brandon — where nearly triple the normal amount of rain has fallen so far this year.

The map, compiled by the Manitoba ag-weather program, shows that the immediate Brandon area has received nearly 260 per cent of the normal rainfall since the start of May.

Around Westman, nearly everywhere showed at least 150 per cent of the normal amount of precipitation.

The driest area in southern Manitoba was around Morden and Winkler, which received about 85–90 per cent of the normal amount.

If it weren't for the rain, it wouldn't have been that bad a growing season. Similar maps show that most of Westman has received a near-normal number of growing degree days and corn heat units.

The maps are interpolated from data collected by Manitoba Agriculture and Environment Canada, and include data up to July 6.

The latest provincial crop report, issued Monday, says that recent drier weather is giving an opportunity for some Westman crops to recover from excess moisture and from flooding, but that water stress is evident in low areas of fields.
