Wheat Kings steal show at bantam draft

The Brandon Wheat Kings didn't have the first pick in the Western Hockey League bantam draft but they made the biggest splash early on.

The Wheat Kings used the fourth overall selection to take centre Nolan Patrick, who led the Winnipeg AAA Bantam Hockey League in scoring this season.

They then traded overage goaltender Corbin Boes and their 17th overall pick to move up to sixth in the draft and selected Kale Clague, who set an Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League scoring record this season. Both Patrick and Clague were considered by some scouts as potential top-two picks in the draft.

In the second round, the Wheat Kings used the 25th overall choice to take Brandonite Tanner Kaspick, a forward who played with the Midget AAA Wheat Kings this season. They added another local player, forward Ty Lewis of the Bantam AAA Wheat Kings, in the third round.

Brandon also made a deal with Regina, sending 18-year-old forward Geordie Maguire and a third-round pick in return for what was termed "draft day considerations." Although not disclosed, it is believed the trade was part of an agreement that the Pats would not take Patrick with the day's second-overall selection.
