Youth co-op program returns

A successful program that gives youth the chance to run their own business is back again this year.

Last year, the Brandon Youth Co-op gave 14 youth the opportunity to run their own co-op business, and with two facilitators this year, the co-op is accepting up to 20 new members, with wiggle room for even more.

The co-op program accepts members from age 12 to 17, and gives them control of the day-to-day operations of a co-op business. The youth members draw up their own contracts, hold their own board meetings, write their own paycheques, choose who will fill each role on the board (treasurer, human resources, etc), and so on.

The program is designed to put youth in control in order to give them a sense of empowerment and to teach them the value of self-motivation and responsibility — while also allowing them to make money.

The co-op will provide a wide selection of services (decided upon by the youth) for the community.

Facilitators with the program are there with the youth guide them and to ensure they stay safe, while letting the youth learn from their own mistakes.

For more information, would-be members can contact Chris at 204-720-6737 or Sydney at 204-868-5662 or can email brandonyouthcoop@gmail.com.
