Big box-office numbers for Gimli Film Festival

ADVANCE ticket sales and a strong lineup of films are highlighted in an 82 per cent increase in box office sales at the Gimli Film Festival.

The 14th annual movie showcase, which wrapped up Sunday with a beachfront screening of Dark Side of the Rainbow, a mashup of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and the classic film The Wizard of Oz, also handed out $32,000 in prize money to filmmakers.

Sonya Ballentyne, whose short film Crash Site will première at the Gimli festival in 2015, won the $10,000 RBC Emerging Filmmaker Competition. Orlando Braun and Joge Requena won the MTS Stories From Home $20,000 Pitch for their project That Mennonite Joke. The Global Audience Choice Award for Best Manitoba Short Film went to Curtis L. Wiebe for his film Of Truth and Magic while the Best Canadian Short Film award went to Fraser Mundan and Neil Rathbone for The Chaperone.
